This morning I attended a screening of Starsky & Hutch. My review follows.
I don’t remember the original show that well (I’m old but not THAT old) but I remember the car. Maigh likes fast cars.
Let me begin with the subtitle “They Are The Man”. That line alone had me wanting to love the movie. You know how I feel about The Man.
I was mildly entertained by an opening scene that included a Vince Vaughn / Juliette Lewis pairing that brought me back to Old School and lifted my hopes. Several other appearances really got me excited - Will Farrell, Snoop and others. The magic of Old School, however, could not be recreated.
It took me a good 15 minutes to place Justin Bateman, what with the distant shots and lame mustache. Snoop just isn’t an actor, and while the end made me “awwwwwwwwwww” in a sweet/ not booing way…it was completely unnecessary. I will say, however, that I was excited by Patton Oswalts surprise appearance. Damn the seventies were a cruel time for fashion.
This movie may be more enjoyable if you’re with friends or if you’re high…who knows. I’m not sure I’d encourage anyone to pay good money to see it, which is a damn shame, because I really wanted to like it.
Oh, the redeeming value? Additional words for my 70’s vocabulary. Now if I’d only taken notes…
