Tycoon Guy writes “Paramount today announced the new Star Trek film is scheduled for release on Christmas Day 2008. The studio also confirmed the film will be directed by J. J. Abrams, who said the film will ‘embrace and respect’ Trek canon, but will also ‘chart its own course.’ Also today, rumors are out claiming Matt Damon, Adrien Brody and Gary Sinise will play Kirk, Spock, and Scotty, respectively.”

Barfalicous.

Why do they keep making all these terrible sequels?

I know they are trying to make money on the nostalgia, but come on. Matt Damon as Kirk.

  2. OK, Gary Sinise already has the Scotty bags under the eyes, making him a shoo-in, but no. Get John C. Reilly or William Macy to be Scotty. Let Sinise be Kirk. Or get that blond guy from Boston Legal - Mark Lavalley. That would be meta.

Matt Damon piloting a starship? I think not. The only thing worse would be Joaquin Phoenix.

Adrien Brody would be a good Spock, though.

UGH. I have to work with guys that get excited about things like this. Makes it tough to say hello, or what’s going on when you know they will start spewing quotes like this out their mouths.

Well, it’s not like I’m a DragonCon kid, but I do loves me some Kirk and Picard. What can I say - I never claimed not to be a nerd.

I’m not saying I’m a Trekkie or anything….but I have to agree with Maigh that I do like some old school Trek and TNG (the rest is crap), BUT why is it that people can geek out about Star Wars (which I am a fan of too) but not Star Trek? It just seems as if there is more of a stigma if you’re a fan of Star Trek. Like it’s a dark mark or something. What gives?

I wonder if it has to do with the fact that Star Trek started on television first. Of course I guess you cant really say that Star Wars fans can geek out on a purist stand point, because I doubt that there are Star Wars fans sitting around thinking, “uh, those Star Trek geeks are losers, they had to have a TV show first. We went straight to the theatre” It’s illogical.

Mostly I love that you just said illogical. I heart Spock.

I think you misread the press release. It was my understanding that Gary Sinise would be playing Dr. Leonard “Bones” McCoy, NOT Montgomery “Scotty” Scott.

And I think you misread my post, in which I was quoting a blurb from Slashdot (gotta follow the links) and not the official press release.

  15. And you guys gotta understand that I called it, given the eye bags, despite the Slashdot misinformation campaign. Heh.
