An acquaintance just left his cushy job as a lawyer with a big firm (and a stable income, etc.) for the freedom of working for himself, of chasing his own dream and not the dream of The Man.

I’ve thought about having a fundraiser here on maigh.com for my “get out of debt (that my worthless ex left me with when he found himself a new young honey but I still take partial responsibility for) ” fund so I could start over.

Would you contribute?

I’d probably make about a buck fifty and I could go back to grade school and buy a box of milk with it.

What does that have to do with being a man?

As I left on his blog: “I wish I was a man just so I could envy your balls.”

If I was out of debt, I’d buy myself a pair.

I also have to think that my sailor mouth would have been/would be better accepted. You know. If I didn’t have boobs and a uterus.

    Hey M,

“What a potty mouth on this one!?” Nah, it’s cool. I like it when some ladies can hang with the rest of us guys! My wife and I are kind of in the same boat as you… kind of. We both have debt, but since I’m the sole provider (right now) we’ve been clearing mine so we can get a house. Whenever we get into any real heated arguments and it looks like we’re on the rim of separating she expresses the amount of debt she has and how we’re not contributing to it.

On another note, you’ve got bawls just by posting this kind of blog post – so grab ‘em when you get a chance! I’ve had to work for myself, briefly, and I would kill for that opportunity again! What kind of business do or would you have to walk away from your current job?

  3. You can doooo eeeet. I did…without a plan or anything, and I am way less brave that you. Lots of women reinvent themselves at about this point in their lives. It’s terrifying, thrilling, tear-jerking and makes you feel like you are floating on air, depending on the day…and I wouldn’t trade it for anything. Jump, and build your wings on the way down! :-)

And the “man” thing? Srsly? Let that one go. You have way more courage than you are giving yourself credit for. It doesn’t matter if your plumbing in on the inside or the outside. You are a rock star.

This man thing it’s all you’ve cracked it up to be… as the seester once told me when I was having my pre-pre mid-life crisis (I’ve had a few and am currently in ruthless impeachment proceedings with my administration)… Leap and the net will appear. It works. I just have a nasty habit of slicing the net open.

Hey! I think you’re referring to me! Thanks for the link love. Oh wait.

I hope you can get where you want to me and do what you want to do. I’m not feeling too fired up about my leap today after having a career coach type of guy tell me I’m not ready. Problem is, I already burned my boat, so I’m doing it anyway. Maybe just to spite him (because in my head, he’d be all kinds of spited and stuff).

Hope to see you soon. Maybe one day, I’ll be promoted above “acquaintance” too!

This is weird for me, because I see your tweets about going to lunch here and there, about vacations and building your home, and I get jealous. I think, “Maigh gets to go out, she gets to get away,” and I feel bad for envying it. From here, it looks like you’re doing well.

We’re stuck in suffocating debt over here, too. I skip things like TweetUps because I can’t afford to drop money on a couple of beers just for fun.

We’re still paying off my wife’s Master’s Degree — we may never get it paid off — and she just got laid off this week. She was more highly trained and experienced than similar coworkers, but she’d been trapped in an entry-level job title and salary by longtime cost-cutting measures. So when it came time to cut actual positions, and they did it by title….

Admittedly, we both chose to work in fields that are, uh, not known for their money. But the degrees and the houses and everything haven’t gotten us much yet, so it sure feels like we got taken. It’s hard to feel valuable like this.

You seem to have a lot of freedom, Maigh. I’m not sure how much more you think you’d get by being debt-free. I guess I’d advise that you don’t have to quit your job or cancel your debt to try things.
